Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions
Preparing the Cake:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar using an electric mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Gradually add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Stir in the vanilla extract until just incorporated.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans, smoothing the tops with a spatula.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Preparing the Frosting:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy using an electric mixer.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until smooth and well combined.
- Mix in the heavy cream and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
Assembling the Cake:
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate as desired with additional frosting, sprinkles, or other toppings.
- Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the frosting to set.
