German Chocolate Poke Cake – Easy, Decadent & Crowd-Pleasing

If you love the rich flavor of German chocolate cake but want a quicker, fuss-free dessert, this German Chocolate Poke Cake is your new go-to. It’s got the same moist chocolate base, sweet caramel filling, and signature coconut-pecan topping—just with way less effort. Perfect for parties, holidays, or “just because,” this cake is a guaranteed hit.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Simple shortcut using a boxed cake mix
  • Moist, gooey center from caramel + sweetened condensed milk
  • Signature topping of toasted coconut and pecans
  • Make-ahead friendly—tastes even better the next day

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix (plus eggs, oil, and water as listed on the box)

For the Filling

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 oz) jar caramel sauce

For the Topping

  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 (8 oz) container Cool Whip or whipped topping
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips, melted (optional drizzle)

Instructions

1. Bake the Cake

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan.
Prepare cake batter per box directions. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

2. Poke the Cake

Using the handle of a wooden spoon or skewer, poke holes all over the cake, about 1 inch apart.

3. Make the Filling

Mix sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce in a bowl until smooth.
Pour evenly over the cake, letting it seep into the holes. Spread gently if needed.

4. Chill

Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours so the filling can soak in.

5. Toast the Topping

In a skillet over medium heat, toast coconut and pecans for 3–4 minutes, stirring until golden. Let cool.

6. Finish the Cake

Spread Cool Whip evenly over the chilled cake.
Sprinkle with toasted coconut and pecans.
Drizzle with melted chocolate if desired.

7. Serve

Slice and enjoy chilled. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Tips & Variations

  • Swap the cake mix for devil’s food or chocolate fudge for a richer base.
  • Use homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip for a fresher taste.
  • Add extra drizzle of caramel for more indulgence.
  • Nut-free? Skip the pecans or replace with sunflower seeds.

This German Chocolate Poke Cake delivers all the flavor of the classic, without the hours of work. Moist, sweet, and irresistibly nutty—it’s the dessert that keeps people coming back for seconds.
