Soft, Buttery, and Fluffy Dinner Rolls

Nothing beats the aroma of fresh, homemade dinner rolls straight from the oven. These buttery, light, and pillowy-soft rolls come together effortlessly with just a few simple ingredients. Perfect for any meal, they pair beautifully with Buttermilk Ranch Oven-Fried Chicken or classic Turkey Meatballs.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

An easy dinner roll recipe is a must-have in every home cook’s collection. These rolls are incredibly soft, subtly sweet, and versatile enough to complement any dish. Whether for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even sandwiches, they’re bound to be a hit!

I’m a self-confessed carb lover, and when I make these rolls, I always plan ahead to ensure I can enjoy at least two with some butter and jam. While they don’t even need butter, it’s a habit I just can’t break!

Quick & Easy Homemade Rolls

These dinner rolls rise twice for just 30 minutes each, meaning you can have them ready in about 90 minutes. The best part? Minimal effort is required, thanks to the stand mixer doing most of the work. Using instant yeast speeds up the process, making it as simple as adding everything together—similar to a bread machine method.

Tips for Perfect Dinner Rolls

  • Prepare Ingredients Ahead – Measure everything before starting for a seamless process.
  • Milk Temperature Matters – Warm milk between 100-110°F to activate the yeast properly. Too hot, and it will kill the yeast.
  • Optimal Rising Environment – Cover rolls with a tea towel or plastic wrap and let them rise in a draft-free spot.
  • Uniform Size for Even Baking – Shape the dough into an 8×12-inch rectangle, cut into 24 equal pieces, and roll them into smooth balls.
  • Golden Brown Perfection – Check at 12 minutes; if they brown too quickly, tent with foil.
  • Finish with Butter – Brushing melted butter on top adds an irresistible golden sheen and extra flavor.

What You’ll Need

  • Quarter sheet pan
  • Stand mixer
  • Digital thermometer
  • Kitchen scale (optional)
  • Glass measuring cup

How to Make the Best Dinner Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp instant yeast
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ cups warm milk (110°F)
  • 5 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, warm milk, butter, and egg.
  2. Attach the dough hook and mix on low speed until combined, scraping the bowl as needed.
  3. Increase to medium speed and mix for 2 minutes.
  4. Add ½ cup flour at a time, blending well. Continue mixing until the dough forms a soft, slightly sticky ball that pulls away from the bowl.
  5. Transfer to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Lightly punch down the dough and divide it into 24 equal pieces.
  7. Shape each into a smooth ball, placing them on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Brush hot rolls with melted butter and serve warm.
