Ingredients

Special Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar or white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sweet relish
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp chili flakes (optional, for added heat)

Main Ingredients:

  • 1/2 bag frozen fries
  • Sliced American cheese or shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 diced onions
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Melt the butter over medium-low heat in a pan and add neutral oil.
    • Toss in the diced onions and salt, stirring occasionally.
    • Cook until the onions are golden and caramelized, about 30 minutes. Lower the heat if needed to prevent burning.
  2. Make the Special Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, sweet relish, sugar, and optional chili flakes. Set aside.
  3. Cook the Fries:
    • Prepare the frozen fries according to package instructions by baking or frying.
  4. Assemble the Fries:
    • Once the fries are done, layer with American cheese slices or shredded cheddar.
    • Broil for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  5. Top and Serve:
    • Add the caramelized onions on top of the melted cheese, then drizzle generously with the special sauce.
    • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a little kick, feel free to add chili flakes to the sauce, though this isn’t traditional for In-N-Out.
  • Keep a close eye on the onions while caramelizing to avoid burning; lower the heat if needed.
  • American cheese gives the most authentic flavor, but shredded cheddar works as well!
