Crispy fries topped with melted American cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and a tangy homemade special sauce. A simple and delicious twist on the iconic In-N-Out dish!
Ingredients
Special Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1/2 tbsp rice vinegar or white vinegar
- 2 tbsp sweet relish
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tbsp chili flakes (optional, for added heat)
Main Ingredients:
- 1/2 bag frozen fries
- Sliced American cheese or shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 diced onions
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp neutral oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Melt the butter over medium-low heat in a pan and add neutral oil.
- Toss in the diced onions and salt, stirring occasionally.
- Cook until the onions are golden and caramelized, about 30 minutes. Lower the heat if needed to prevent burning.
- Make the Special Sauce:
- In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, vinegar, sweet relish, sugar, and optional chili flakes. Set aside.
- Cook the Fries:
- Prepare the frozen fries according to package instructions by baking or frying.
- Assemble the Fries:
- Once the fries are done, layer with American cheese slices or shredded cheddar.
- Broil for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and gooey.
- Top and Serve:
- Add the caramelized onions on top of the melted cheese, then drizzle generously with the special sauce.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- For a little kick, feel free to add chili flakes to the sauce, though this isn’t traditional for In-N-Out.
- Keep a close eye on the onions while caramelizing to avoid burning; lower the heat if needed.
- American cheese gives the most authentic flavor, but shredded cheddar works as well!
