How to Make Fried Mushrooms

  1. Prepare the Coating: In a small bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with Old Bay seasoning, marjoram, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Pour buttermilk into another bowl.
  2. Prepare the Mushrooms: Wash and dry the mushrooms thoroughly. Place them in a zip-top bag with a little flour and shake until they’re lightly coated.
  3. Bread the Mushrooms: Dip each mushroom in buttermilk, then roll it in the seasoned panko breadcrumbs, ensuring an even coating.
  4. Fry the Mushrooms: In a Dutch oven or heavy pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry a few mushrooms at a time until golden brown, then transfer to a paper towel or wire rack to drain.

Enjoy them warm and crispy!

Air Fryer Method

  1. Bread the mushrooms as directed.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the mushrooms in a single layer and cook for 5-7 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Tip: Mushrooms will be very hot, so be cautious with the first bite!

Preparation Tips

  • For the cleanest mushrooms, rinse briefly with cold water and pat dry. Avoid soaking them.
  • Use separate hands for wet and dry ingredients to prevent clumping.
  • Maintain oil temperature at 375°F for the best frying results.
  • For a flavorful finish, serve with ranch, Southern Comeback Sauce, or boom boom sauce.

Storage and Reheat

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 6-7 minutes until crispy.

Best Mushrooms to Use

Small white button mushrooms work wonderfully, as do small cremini mushrooms. Trim the stems slightly and be sure to rinse and dry well before coating.

Serve these with your favorite dipping sauce for an irresistible appetizer that’s sure to impress!
