Creole-Style Shrimp and Sausage

Creole-Style Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo is a flavorful, comforting dish that brings the vibrant flavors of Louisiana right into your home. This slow-cooked gumbo features tender shrimp, smoky sausage, and fresh veggies, all simmered in a rich, spicy broth. With the ease of a slow cooker, the flavors meld perfectly, and the addition of okra gives it that authentic Creole touch. Serve over warm rice for a hearty, satisfying meal that’s sure to impress.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (14 oz each) stewed tomatoes
  • 1/4 lb reduced-fat smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/8 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 lb fresh sliced okra
  • 3/4 lb medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 cups cooked rice, warm

Instructions:

  1. Set Up the Slow Cooker: In a 6-quart slow cooker, combine stewed tomatoes, sliced sausage, red bell pepper, garlic, and crushed red pepper. Stir to mix.
  2. Cook Low and Slow: Cover and cook on low heat for 6-7 hours to let the flavors fully develop.
  3. Add Okra and Shrimp: In the last 30 minutes, stir in the sliced okra. Add the shrimp 10 minutes before cooking is complete, allowing them to cook until pink and opaque.
  4. Season and Serve: Season with salt to taste. Serve over warm cooked rice.
