Ingredients & Substitutions
Mushrooms:
White button mushrooms are ideal for this recipe, as they absorb all the flavors of the Cowboy Butter while cooking, resulting in tender, flavorful bites. You can also use cremini, portobello, shiitake, or any mushroom variety you prefer.
Cowboy Butter:
Cowboy Butter is a versatile compound butter made by blending herbs, spices, and a touch of heat from cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes. This zesty butter enhances the mushrooms’ flavor and can also be used as a dip, spread, or to top other dishes.
Make-Ahead Tips
Cowboy Butter:
For convenience, prepare the Cowboy Butter in advance. Double the recipe for this mushroom dish and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When ready, simply melt the butter in a skillet and cook the mushrooms.
Without Make-Ahead Butter:
You can still make these mushrooms without pre-made butter. Add all the butter, herbs, and spices directly to a skillet, melt, and cook the mushrooms as instructed.
How to Cook Cowboy Mushrooms

- Once melted, add the mushrooms and stir to coat evenly.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20–22 minutes or until mushrooms are tender and golden brown.
- Season with salt to taste and serve immediately.
