Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos

Take inspiration from the iconic Bonefish Grill menu with these healthier Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos! The shrimp is perfectly crispy from the air fryer, tossed in a creamy and spicy bang bang sauce, and paired with fresh homemade slaw and soft flour tortillas. Ready in under 30 minutes, this fun and flavorful dinner is perfect for Taco Tuesday or any weeknight meal.

Why You’ll Love These Tacos

  • A lighter, healthier take on the Bonefish Grill Bang Bang Shrimp.
  • Crispy shrimp cooked in the air fryer with minimal oil.
  • Rich and creamy bang bang sauce with a perfect sweet-and-spicy balance.
  • Homemade slaw adds crunch and freshness for a complete meal.
  • Dairy-free as is, and easily made gluten-free.

Ingredients

For the Air Fryer Shrimp:

  • 1 lb large raw shrimp, peeled, deveined & tail-off
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups panko breadcrumbs (Japanese-style preferred)
  • ½ cup tapioca flour (or arrowroot starch/cornstarch)
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • Kosher salt & black pepper
  • Cooking spray

For the Bang Bang Sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup Thai sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tsp sriracha (optional, adjust to taste)

For the Slaw:

  • 8 oz coleslaw mix
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • ¼ cup chopped green onion
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • Squirt of sriracha (optional)
  • Kosher salt, to taste

To Serve:

  • 10 flour tortillas
  • Chopped green onion for garnish

Instructions

1. Prep the Dredging Stations

Pat the shrimp dry. Set up three shallow bowls:

  1. Mix the tapioca flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Place the breadcrumbs in the second bowl.
  3. Whisk the eggs with a splash of water in the third bowl.

2. Bread the Shrimp

Dip each shrimp in the flour mixture, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs. Place the shrimp in the air fryer basket, spray lightly with cooking oil, and cook in batches if needed.

3. Air Fry

Cook at 390°F for 7 minutes, flipping halfway through. Spray the shrimp with a little more oil after flipping for extra crispiness.

4. Make the Bang Bang Sauce & Slaw

  • Whisk together all sauce ingredients in a medium bowl.
  • Toss all slaw ingredients in a large bowl until combined.

5. Coat Shrimp & Assemble Tacos

  • Toss cooked shrimp in the bang bang sauce, reserving a bit for garnish if desired.
  • Warm the tortillas. Assemble tacos: layer slaw, shrimp, additional sauce, and garnish with green onion.

Tips & Variations

  • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free panko and tortillas.
  • Bang Bang Bowl: Skip the tortillas and serve shrimp over rice with slaw, avocado, and sesame seeds for a bowl version.
  • Storage: Store shrimp, sauce, and slaw separately in the fridge. Reheat shrimp in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes before serving.
